Kalpana Chawla hailed from Karnal, Haryana and was an American astronaut and engineer.

Journey to Space

She was the first woman on Indian origin to go to space in November 1997.

Space Shuttle Columbia

She was a part of the 6-member crew that flew space shuttle columbia flight STS-87.


Kalpana fulfilled her dream of visiting space till her last breath when the STS-107 spacecraft disintegrating during its re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere on February 1, 2003.

Posthumous Awards

NASA dedicated a supercomputer in her name and Indian Satellite MetSat-1 was renamed Kalpana-1 in her honour. She was also awarded the Congressional Space Mission of Honour.
