ChatGPT Down: AI Reliability Questioned After Global Outage

ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot, suffered a major outage, raising concerns about the reliability of AI technologies. Users worldwide were left frustrated as the service went offline.

Millions of users worldwide were left frustrated today when the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT went offline due to a technical issue. The outage, which began around 7 PM Eastern Time (ET), also affected other OpenAI services like their API and Sora.

OpenAI Acknowledges Issue and Works on Fix

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, quickly took to social media to acknowledge the issue. They assured users they had identified the problem and were working on a fix. Their statement on the platform formerly known as Twitter read, "We're experiencing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix. Sorry and we'll keep you updated."

This outage caused widespread disruption. Many businesses that rely on OpenAI's API for their projects were also affected. Regular users reported slow login times and degraded performance when attempting to access ChatGPT.

According to Down Detector, a service that tracks online outages based on user reports, there was a significant increase in complaints about ChatGPT being unavailable. While the actual number of affected users may be higher or lower than reported, it's clear a large number were impacted.

OpenAI Works on Resolution and Transparency

OpenAI hasn't provided a specific time for when services will be restored to normal. However, they committed to keeping users updated on the situation. An OpenAI engineer shared on social media, "We have reports of issues accessing our platform and ChatGPT. We've identified the problem and are working on a fix. We apologize for the downtime and are working as fast as possible to get things back to normal."

It's important to note that this wasn't the only major social media outage today. Earlier, Meta's Facebook and Instagram platforms experienced issues affecting thousands of users across the United States. These outages began around 12:50 PM ET. Additionally, Meta's messaging app, WhatsApp, also faced problems, impacting over 1,000 users.

This incident highlights the growing importance of reliable online services, especially for businesses and individuals who rely on them for communication and work.
