New Renault Duster India Launch in 2026 with Strong Hybrid Powertrain
Renault India is set to launch the third-gen Duster and Bigster SUVs in 2026 with a strong hybrid option, skipping mild hybrid tech. The move aligns with India's fuel-efficiency goals and targets rivals like the Hyryder and Grand Vitara.
Renault India is preparing to launch its next-generation Duster and its 7-seater variant, the Bigster, in 2026. With the compact SUV space getting hotter in India, Renault is considering a strong hybrid powertrain for both vehicles, indicating a big shift towards cleaner and more efficient technologies. Renault has eliminated mild-hybrid possibilities for India, said Renault India MD & CEO Venkatram Mamillapalle.
Renault Duster: Mild Hybrid Out, Strong Hybrid In for India
In a strategic move, Renault is opting for a strong hybrid configuration instead of a mild-hybrid one, mainly because of the performance advantage and future market prospects. Though worldwide markets already have access to both mild and strong hybrids for the new-gen Duster, India will receive the petrol variant first and then a strong hybrid version in later 2026.
Clean Fuel and Next-Gen Tech Focus
Renault is still studying CNG and ethanol fuel tech as well as hybrid powertrains in India. Renault is also interested in range extender technology, but this is a long-term objective with no set time frame. These systems are more complicated and expensive, but localization would help lower costs should the company sell these cars overseas from India.
Renault Duster: Hybrid Powertrains in International Markets
In the global markets:
Mild Hybrid Duster sports a 1.2L turbo-petrol engine (3-cylinder) with an electric motor with 48V, delivering 130 PS. Available in both FWD and AWD, it has options of 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT gears and various terrain modes.
Strong Hybrid Duster uses a 1.6L NA petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.2 kWh battery, delivering 140 PS through a multi-mode automatic transmission. This variant supports electric-only mode for short trips, ideal for city driving, but is only available in FWD.
Other international options include a dual-fuel (petrol + LPG) 1.0L turbo engine (100 PS), but this is unlikely for India.

India Launch in 2026
The India-bound third-gen Duster will compete with heavyweights such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Skoda Kushaq, and VW Taigun. Only Hyryder and Grand Vitara have strong hybrid offerings in this segment so far, providing Renault with a chance to fill a competitive void.
The Bigster will further extend Renault's range in the mid-size 7-seater SUV segment, targeting family customers and those looking for added room without sacrificing efficiency.
