UPI Lite Update: Auto Top-Up and Increased Transaction Limit from November 1
Great news for the UPI Lite users. As the Reserve Bank of India had recently declared the doubling of the limit on transaction to be made by using the lite version of the platform UPI Lite. It means it will reduce the complications regarding transactions in future times as well. From 1st November, 2024, there would be two significant changes related to the platform of UPI Lite. In addition, there will be an auto top-up feature that will automatically begin replenishing the balance in the UPI Lite wallets the moment the balance goes down to a certain threshold. This way, no one will ever have to manually top up their wallet. Thus, they'll always have a seamless experience in making payments on UPI Lite.
New Features Roll Out from November 1
The UPI Lite auto top-up feature shall go live on November 1, 2024. It was introduced when it was seen as one of the ways to readily carry out small-value transactions where the UPI PIN would not be required-it remains at present that the users will have to conduct their own wallet balance topping from the bank account, by means of manual recharge. Still, with the initiation of auto top-up by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), there's hope for doing that as well. In the notice dated August 27, 2024, NPCI first announced the auto-pay balance feature for UPI Lite.

Auto-balance recharge with UPI Lite
The new update will enable users to set a minimum balance for their UPI Lite wallet. If the balance in the wallet falls below this limit, it will automatically be refilled from the linked bank account with a pre-set amount chosen by the user. The maximum balance that can be held in a UPI Lite wallet is ₹2,000, and users can make up to five top-ups per day.
To enjoy the balance in auto-pay, NPCI is asking the UPI Lite users to activate it before October 31, 2024. The auto-top-up feature will be available from November 1.
Restrictions of UPI Lite:
Currently, UPI Lite supports transactions up to ₹500 per transaction and with a maximum wallet balance of ₹2,000. The RBI has proposed increasing the per-transaction limit to ₹1,000 and raising the maximum wallet balance limit to ₹5,000. This will offer flexibility to users and make UPI Lite even more versatile for everyday payments.
