WhatsApp Set to Roll Out 'Like' Reactions for Status Updates, Alongside New AI Voice Chat Feature

WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a new feature that will allow users to express their appreciation for status updates by using a simple "like" reaction. This addition mirrors Instagram's story likes and is currently being tested with a select group of beta users. The feature is expected to be rolled out to the broader WhatsApp user base in the near future.

As reported by WABetaInfo, the like reaction feature has been in development for some time and is now available to users with the latest beta version of WhatsApp. Users will find a heart emoji icon at the bottom left of the screen when viewing a status update. By tapping this icon, they can send a like, which will notify the status updater and display the names of those who liked their status in the usual views list. This feature aims to simplify the way users engage with each other's content without initiating a full conversation, offering a more streamlined method of interaction.

The introduction of status likes will not impact chat conversations, as these reactions will appear separately from chat threads. This ensures that important messages remain unaffected by status interactions. Users will still be able to respond to statuses in the traditional way if they choose.

In addition to the status like feature, WhatsApp is also working on an innovative voice chat functionality integrated with Meta AI. This new feature will enable users to engage in real-time voice conversations with a chatbot. According to WABetaInfo, the voice chat feature is under development in the WhatsApp beta version 24.16.10.70 for iOS and will offer a range of default Meta AI voice options for handling user queries.

The voice chat feature will not automatically activate; users will have the flexibility to end the conversation at any time. Furthermore, iOS users will receive a privacy indicator notification to confirm when Meta AI is no longer listening to their voice queries, ensuring transparency regarding microphone usage.

Both of these features—status likes and Meta AI voice chat—reflect WhatsApp's ongoing efforts to enhance user experience and engagement on the platform. The gradual rollout of these updates is expected to bring new ways for users to connect and interact with content and each other.
