Zomato Introduces District App for Dining and Live Events

Zomato’s new District app targets dining, ticketed events, and live entertainment, building on its $500M dining-out business. Available on Android and iOS, it competes with Paytm Insider.

The restaurant discovery app Zomato has announced a new application called District that is targeting its expanding 'going out' business. The app addresses dining out, ticketed events, and live entertainment--thus a place for all the users going out for some sort of recreation.

District is available on both Android and iOS platforms and seems to be in its beta mode to compete with Paytm's Insider and TicketNew apps, one could add. The app integrates features that were previously only available on Zomato's main platform, including dining and entertainment bookings.

Going Beyond Home Services

Deepinder Goyal, co-founder of Zomato, recently wrote a letter to shareholders in which he emphasized the significance of the app. "Zomato and Blinkit are large consumer businesses focused on home needs but also own one of India's largest going-out businesses," he said.

The dining-out business has hit a run rate of more than $500 million in annualized gross order value and is already profitable. Interestingly, Goyal indicated that the scope is not limited to dining out but can be taken to others such as movies, sports, live performances, shopping, and staycations.

The Roaring Start for the Segment

In July 2023, the 'going-out' segment was added to Zomato's official list of earners. In the quarter Q1FY25, revenue came in at ₹95 crore, and profit stood at ₹11 crore.
