Government Offers Subsidy for Rooftop Solar Panels: Extra Electricity Sales Allowed

CHAMARAJANAGAR — The central government has announced a subsidy scheme for installing rooftop solar panels, providing an opportunity for homeowners to benefit from free electricity and earn income through surplus power sales. The new initiative is expected to support those interested in reducing their electricity bills and generating additional revenue.

Under the scheme, households using up to 200 units of electricity per month currently receive free power through the state's Griha Jyoti Scheme. For users exceeding this threshold, electricity bills are issued. The central government’s plan allows these households to install solar panels on their rooftops, with the cost partially covered by a subsidy. In addition to this, homeowners will have the option to sell excess electricity generated back to the grid, providing a potential source of income.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is overseeing the implementation of this scheme. Homeowners interested in the program can obtain more information and apply through the CESCOM (Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation) helpdesk. They can initially cover the installation costs themselves and subsequently claim a subsidy of up to ₹78,000, depending on the capacity of the solar panel system.

Subsidies are available for different capacities of solar panel systems: ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 for 1 to 2 kilowatts, ₹60,000 to ₹78,000 for 2 to 3 kilowatts, and up to ₹78,000 for systems larger than 3 kilowatts. After the installation, the expenditure can be reclaimed through the subsidy program.

The scheme also includes provisions for connecting the generated solar power to the CESCOM grid. Homeowners can sell surplus electricity to the grid, ensuring they receive compensation while also benefiting from reduced electricity bills.

For further details or to inquire about the application process, individuals can contact CESCOM at 0821-2544963 or 1912. Informational brochures about the scheme are being distributed to electricity consumers to ensure widespread awareness.

This initiative is particularly advantageous for those with significant rooftop space and high electricity consumption, offering both financial relief and a potential income source. Ramachandra Rao, the Chief Engineer of CESCOM, Chamrajanagar, highlighted the benefits and assured that efforts are being made to educate and assist potential beneficiaries.
