Delhi Sarai Kale Khan Chowk Renamed as Birsa Munda Chowk to Honor Tribal Leader
In a significant move, the Sarai Kale Khan Chowk in Delhi has been renamed as Birsa Munda Chowk, in a tribute to the legendary tribal leader and freedom fighter, Bhagwan Birsa Munda. The renaming coincides with the 150th birth anniversary of Munda, who played a crucial role in the tribal freedom struggle against British colonial rule.
Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar Announces the Renaming
Union Minister of Urban Development, Manohar Lal Khattar, made the announcement during a special event on Friday. Speaking at the occasion, Khattar emphasized that the renaming was not just about a change of name, but about honoring Munda’s legacy and ensuring his contributions continue to inspire future generations. He remarked, "Seeing this statue and the name of that chowk, not only the citizens of Delhi but also the people visiting the International Bus stand will definitely be inspired by his contribution."
Statue of Birsa Munda Unveiled in Delhi
Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with Khattar and Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, unveiled a statue of Bhagwan Birsa Munda in Delhi. This was part of the commemoration of his 150th birth anniversary, further solidifying his place as a prominent figure in India’s history. Munda was the leader of the "Ulgulan" (rebellion), a movement that fought against British colonial exploitation of tribal communities in the Chotanagpur region.
Birsa Munda’s Legacy
Bhagwan Birsa Munda is remembered for his relentless fight for tribal land rights and his leadership in the rebellion against British policies that deprived tribals of their lands and forced them into bonded labor. His leadership and vision made him a revered figure among tribal communities, earning him the title of 'Dharti Aba' (Father of the Earth). He was also a religious leader who founded the Birsait faith, blending animism with indigenous beliefs, emphasizing the worship of a single god.
Janjatiya Gaurav Divas
In recognition of his contributions, the Central Government declared November 15, the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Divas’ in 2021. The day is dedicated to celebrating the contributions of tribal communities across India.
The renaming of Sarai Kale Khan Chowk to Birsa Munda Chowk is a fitting tribute to this tribal icon, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire the generations to come.
