Chennai Metro Phase 2 Milestone: Tunnel Boring Machine 'Cauvery' Completes Journey to Adyar Station
In a significant achievement for the Chennai Metro Rail Phase 2 project, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) named 'Cauvery' has successfully completed its work, reaching Adyar station. This milestone marks the progress of the metro's expansion, as the project aims to cover 116.1 km across three corridors.
The tunneling operations along Corridor 3, from Greenways Road to Adyar Junction, began in February 2023. Each tunnel spans 1,228 meters, with a 300-meter stretch running beneath the Adyar River at depths of 10 to 13 meters. The project deploys two Earth Pressure Balance TBMs named 'Cauvery' and 'Adyar' to carry out the tunneling.
'Cauvery' successfully finished its portion of the tunneling, reaching Adyar Station, while work continues on the second machine. Chennai Metro's project director, Archunan, along with other officials, inspected the site and expressed satisfaction with the progress.
The tunneling completion is a crucial step toward improving the city’s infrastructure, offering faster and more efficient transportation options for residents. The metro’s second phase is expected to drastically reduce travel time across the city and ease traffic congestion.
