Nightmare on Delhi-Mumbai Expressway: What's the mystery behind stone-pelting on vehicles near Ratlam?

The 25-kilometer stretch between Dhamnod and Shivgad, near the center point of Ratlam, is witnessing frequent stone-pelting incidents.

Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh: While the eight-lane Delhi-Mumbai Expressway has made long-distance travel easier and saved time for commuters, it has recently become perilous, especially at night. The 25-kilometer stretch between Dhamnod and Shivgad, near the center point of Ratlam, is witnessing frequent stone-pelting incidents, making it hazardous for travelers.

Growing Threat on the Expressway

Reports indicate that vehicles traveling between Dhamnod and Shivgad at night are being targeted with stones. These frequent attacks have caused significant damage to vehicles and resulted in injuries to some passengers. However, what is perplexing is that these stone-pelting incidents have not led to any subsequent robbery attempts. Small vehicles such as cars and passenger vans are primarily targeted after dark.

Increasing Fear Among Travelers

The persistent stone-pelting incidents have instilled fear among travelers. Those who have experienced these attacks have started warning others to avoid traveling on this stretch of the expressway at night. In January, former MLA Dilip Makwana's vehicle was also attacked, resulting in a shattered windshield.

Possible Motives Behind the Attacks

According to the Superintendent of Police (SP), these incidents may be linked to discontent among local tribal communities. The expressway has disrupted their access to villages and farmlands, leading to frustration. Previous meetings between expressway authorities and villagers had temporarily resolved some issues, but new areas are now experiencing similar problems.

Police Response and Actions

In response to the rising number of stone-pelting incidents, police patrols have been increased along the affected stretch. The authorities have vowed to take strict action against those involved in these attacks. Additionally, efforts are being made to communicate with local villagers to address their grievances and find a lasting solution.

As authorities work to curb the stone-pelting incidents, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway remains a dangerous route at night, particularly near Ratlam. The primary concern is the risk of severe accidents due to the high-speed vehicles on the expressway. Resolving this issue is crucial to ensuring the safety of travelers and maintaining the expressway's benefits for the region.
