Delhi Weather Update: Cold Wave Grips, Temperature to Further Dips and Rain till December 14

The much-awaited wintry touch has finally taken over Delhi's weather. The temperatures have plummeted to around 8°C in the national capital, indicating that the city is slowly but surely settling into its winter skin. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is predicting that the cold wave will persist in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and other northern states till December 14.

On Sunday evening, December 8, scattered light rain occurred in many areas of Delhi-NCR like West Delhi, Outer North Delhi, and Gurugram, which further accentuated the wintery atmosphere. The IMD has issued a forecast predicting light rain at isolated locations in Delhi such as Rajouri Garden, Patel Nagar, Buddha Jayanti Park, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Najafgarh, and Delhi Cantonment, besides other parts of the NCR.

The main reason for these weather changes is a Western Disturbance, which is likely to bring mild to moderate rainfall and even snowfall over the Western Himalayan region between December 9 and 11. Apart from the rain, Delhi will also face dense fog, which is likely to affect visibility and traffic from December 9-10. The cold wave will further drop temperatures, making the winter feel even more bitter in Delhi and its surrounding areas.

For Delhi residents, the chilliest time of the season is upon them. The IMD also predicted that light rain showers were in store for Sunday in northern states, particularly Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh, and there may even be drizzle in the capital. Hisar recorded the lowest temperature in the region on December 8 with just 4.7°C.

As the cold wave sets in, Delhi temperatures will remain around 8°C on Monday, December 9, and with cold winds and occasional showers, it will be even chillier. Early snowfall in the northern regions could make things worse in the next few days.
