New Delhi to Introduce Congestion Tax, Atishi Government Plans to Tackle Traffic Woes

The Delhi government plans to introduce a congestion tax to reduce traffic and pollution in the capital. Inspired by cities like London, New York, and Singapore, this move aims to manage rising vehicle numbers and improve air quality in New Delhi.

Delhi to Implement Congestion Tax During Peak Hours

The Delhi government is set to introduce a congestion tax to tackle increasing traffic and pollution in the capital. This tax will apply to vehicles entering the city during peak hours (8:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM) at 13 major entry points. By managing traffic flow more efficiently, the government hopes to reduce congestion and improve air quality.

Fastag System for Seamless Tax Collection

To make the process efficient, the government will use the Fastag system for collecting the congestion tax, eliminating the need for manual toll collection. RFID readers and NPR (Number Plate Recognition) cameras will ensure that vehicles pay the tax without stopping, minimizing traffic delays and preventing jams near collection points.

Exemptions and Focus on Public Infrastructure

Certain vehicles, including two-wheelers, non-polluting, and electric vehicles, will be exempt from the congestion tax. The revenue generated will be used to enhance public transportation and improve road conditions in Delhi. With a strong commitment to implementing the congestion tax this time, the government aims to create a cleaner, more efficient city, following the successful models of global cities like London and New York.
