Tensions flared during the Meerapur by-election as voters in Kakrauli accused police of preventing them from casting their votes, leading to protests and stone pelting. Despite early disruptions, polling resumed under tight security, with officials ensuring the process continued smoothly across the constituency.

Voting is underway for the Meerapur Assembly by-election today. By 9 a.m., the voter turnout in the constituency had reached 13%. However, the polling day witnessed chaos and tension in Kakrauli, where voters accused the police of preventing them from casting their votes, leading to protests and stone pelting.

Voting and Incidents of Unrest

Polling began at 7 a.m. and will continue until 5 p.m. The constituency has been divided into six zones and 33 sectors for better management. A total of 324,571 registered voters are eligible to cast their votes in this by-election.

Despite the arrangements, disruptions were reported from multiple polling centers. In Kithora, Samajwadi Party (SP) alleged that the police were obstructing voters. Meanwhile, in Kakrauli, tensions escalated when locals accused the police of stopping them from voting, resulting in heated arguments and protests.

Clashes in Kakrauli

Kakrauli, known for its significant Muslim voter base, became a focal point of unrest. Villagers alleged that police officers were turning them away from polling stations, claiming their votes had already been cast. This sparked outrage, and locals attempted to block roads in protest. During the commotion, stones were pelted at the police.

Police forces deployed in the area responded with mild force to disperse the protesters and restore order. The situation was eventually brought under control, and voting resumed without further disruptions.

Political Sensitivities

Kakrauli has drawn considerable attention during the election campaign. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi both prioritized this area, addressing rallies and focusing on its influential Muslim electorate.

Cause of the Dispute

The confrontation reportedly began early in the morning when some villagers claimed they were denied entry at polling stations and were told their votes had already been cast. Angered by this, they gathered on the main road to protest, leading to clashes with the police.

Though tensions remain high, authorities have ensured that polling continues smoothly across the constituency.
