Mumbai: More than 62,000 Ganesh idols were immersed in various water bodies across Mumbai on the second day of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, civic officials reported on Monday.

The festival, which began on Saturday, saw families and public groups (sarvajanik mandals) installing Lord Ganesh idols at their homes and in community pandals throughout the city. The immersion of these idols began on Sunday afternoon, marking the end of the one-and-a-half-day celebrations for many devotees.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), by midnight on Sunday, a total of 62,569 idols were immersed in the sea, other natural water bodies, and artificial ponds set up across the city.

The BMC further confirmed that no untoward incidents were reported during the immersions. “Everything went smoothly, and we ensured that all safety measures were in place,” a civic official stated.

Of the total idols immersed, 62,197 were household idols, while 348 belonged to public mandals. The BMC also highlighted its efforts to reduce water pollution, noting that 29,923 household idols and 234 sarvajanik idols were immersed in artificial ponds specially constructed for the occasion.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10-day festival that sees devotees bid farewell to the deity on different days, including after one-and-a-half days, five days, seven days, and on the final day, known as Anant Chaturdashi.

With the festival set to continue for several more days, officials are gearing up for further immersions, particularly as larger public celebrations come to an end.
