West Bengal: Potatoes May Be Dropped from Essential Kitchen List, Know Why

This move has led to widespread disruption in the supply chain and escalating prices across markets.

Kolkata: Potatoes, a staple in many Indian kitchens, are at risk of being dropped from the list of essential foods due to the government's decision to stop the supply of potatoes to other states. This move has led to widespread disruption in the supply chain and escalating prices across markets.

Interstate Supply Halt Causes Shortages

Potato traders have reported that vehicles transporting potatoes are being stopped when attempting to export to other states. This has sparked a statewide strike by potato traders, further exacerbating the supply issues. As a result, the price of potatoes has surged significantly in markets across the state.

Price Surge in Markets

On Wednesday morning, consumers in markets like Sen Market, Muchipara Bazaar, and Benachiti Bazaar in Durgapur were shocked to find the price of potatoes soaring to 45-50 rupees per kilogram. Traders explained, "There is a severe shortage of potatoes in the market due to the traders' association strike, which has halted transportation. This is causing prices to rise. If the strike continues, potatoes might not be available in the market at all."

Consumer Concerns

ConsumersWes expressed their distress over the rising prices, saying, "The continuous increase in potato prices is causing severe problems for us. It has become a major concern for the middle class. If this issue is not resolved soon, we won't be able to afford potatoes at such high prices. The government needs to address this."

Government and Traders' Response

Potato traders across the state have called for a strike, protesting the halt in interstate supply. The government has yet to respond to the traders' demands or take action to stabilize the supply and prices.

As the strike continues and the supply of potatoes remains disrupted, both traders and consumers are feeling the impact. The escalating prices and potential shortage of potatoes in the market pose a significant challenge, particularly for middle-class households. Immediate intervention by the government is necessary to resolve the issue and ensure the availability of this essential food item at affordable prices.
