IndiGo CEO Declares End to Aircraft Grounding Issues: Expecting Fewer Than 50 by March 2025 - Read Now
IndiGo aims to reduce its grounded aircraft to under 50 by March 2025, as CEO Pieter Elbers expresses optimism. Despite a ₹986.7 crore loss in Q2FY25, the airline expects a positive travel season. Shares dip following the disappointing earnings report.
According to Bloomberg Television, IndiGo's CEO, Pieter Elbers, said that the company was turning the corner with the airline going "back to business as usual," he said in an interview. The InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.-owned carrier was having a significant number of grounded aircraft, but Elbers said that number would dip below 50 by next March, lower than above 70 at one stage this year.
The grounding issues with the airline have affected its financial performance. In the first two years of operation, the airline was reporting unexpected losses due to increased fuel prices and maintenance costs. However, Elbers is optimistic about the upcoming peak travel season in India, noting a "healthy growth pattern" in bookings and an "extremely positive" outlook for the airline's operations.
IndiGo reported a net loss of ₹986.7 crore in its Q2FY25 results announced on Monday, which it blamed on the continued grounding of aircraft and a rise in fuel prices. The stock had plunged sharply after the underwhelming set of earnings and closed at ₹4,015.50 per share on the Bombay Stock Exchange, down 8%. In the trade, the stock fell as low as ₹3,778.50 and wiped off ₹13,481.88 crore in market cap to settle at ₹1,55,107.61 crore.
The downward trend continued on Tuesday with shares trading at ₹3,997.60 at 10:20 am. "Despite all these negatives, IndiGo would still be wanting an improvement in its fleet performance. We have to some extent already begun this process by reducing its count of grounded aircraft into high 60s from mid-70s," the carrier said in an official statement. For the airline, the number should ideally stand at under 60 by year-end.
One of the Indian airlines that recently achieved a record milestone is IndiGo, becoming the first airline to operate more than 400 aircraft. In these turbulent times, this is one of the factors that might help the company emerge successful in the future with its focus on reducing grounded aircraft and optimizing operations.
With the arrival of travel seasons, everyone would be focusing their attention on its performance and how IndiGo is getting recovered in the next coming months. The investment community, the passengers are hopeful about getting a turnaround because of that IndiGo would have stabilised operations and tried to regain market confidence again.
