PAN 2.0 Goes Digital: Will Physical PAN Cards Still Be Needed?
The Indian government has brought out PAN 2.0, which is the totally digital version of the Permanent Account Number (PAN) card. This will make PAN usage more secure and convenient, with features like a QR code for instant verification of a cardholder's details.
Key Features of PAN 2.0
Digital Transition: PAN 2.0 does away with the requirement of carrying a physical card. Institutions and individuals can verify PAN details digitally by scanning the QR code attached to the digital version, just like Aadhaar's QR functionality.
Ease of Use: PAN 2.0 will be accepted in large numbers in digital formats, so it will be used hassle-free for banking, income tax returns, and all other official purposes without the need to carry a physical copy.
Is the Physical PAN Card Obsolete?
With PAN 2.0, there would not be a need for customers to carry a physical PAN card and all the transactions, involving PAN, could be addressed digitally. However, until the transition is fully effectuated, the existing PAN 2.0 cards will remain valid.
Free distribution of PAN 2.0:
The government will replace all the existing PAN cards with PAN 2.0 at no cost to the user. Users will not need to apply for the upgrade as the government will dispatch the updated cards automatically.
