Meet Subbiah, The Butler Who Was Part of Tata’s Inner Circle : Ratan Tata’s Rs 10,000 Crore Will

Ratan Tata’s Rs 10,000 crore will reveals his thoughtful provisions for loyal companions, including his long-time butler Subbiah, close associate Shantanu Naidu, and his German Shepherd Tito. Tata’s legacy reflects his deep sense of loyalty and care for those who stood by him.

Former chairman of Tata Group and one of India's greatest industrialists, Ratan Tata, may be gone but his legacy lives on in not only the business milestones but also through generous provision made for those who stood with him throughout his life. During his final declaration, when valuing his estate at Rs 10,000 crore, he included some surprising share-holders such as his butler Subbiah, confidant Shantanu Naidu, and his dearly loved German Shepherd Tito.

Shantanu Naidu, a close associate who worked closely with Tata for years, is a beneficiary of Tata's will. The founder of Goodfellows, the company that offers companionship to the elderly, received support from Tata not only in his personal life but also professionally. Tata funded Naidu's company and waived his international tuition when he was abroad studying. Their love for dogs only made their bond stronger, and when Naidu returned to India, he made sure to work in Tata's office as he had found a constant companion in the young man.

This was yet another relationship that depicted complete trust and love.

Love for German Shepherd: Tito

Another dog Ratan Tata was also known for his unconditional love was Tito, the German Shepherd. Tito proved to be a constant companion to Tata, majorly due to the sad death of his first companion. Provisions in the will about the well-being of Tito, as an industrialist who had taken care of his first companion, had indeed taken provisions in the will for the well-being of the second one too. To take care of Tito, the professional cook working under the Tata household, for long time, Rajan Shaw was appointed as the caretaker of Tito. TATA made provisions for the "unlimited" care and attention to the dog for all times to come. This was a sign of how much Tata wanted his pets to be loved and taken care of even after his time.

Subbiah: More Than Just a Butler

Subbiah, who had been the butler of Tata for more than three decades, also inherited part of the enormous estate. Subbiah was much more than a servant to Tata. He was a dear friend whom Tata had shared the most momentous moments of his life. In fact, Tata used to especially gift Subbiah designer clothes from his international tours; this is indeed a testament to their close friendship. In his will, Tata made provision for the welfare of Subbiah, as a reward for the loyal service and companionship that he had given him.

With his arrangements for Shantanu Naidu, Subbiah, Rajan Shaw, and Tito, Ratan Tata proved himself to be truly caring for those people who were there for him regardless of their position. The concerned provisions reflect Tata's legacy of kindness, generosity, and loyalty, not only towards his family but also to the circle of trusted confidants he keeps around him.
