NMC Issues Show Cause Notice Over Unreported Medical Student Stipends
NMC has published a list of government and private colleges failing to disclose stipend details for medical interns, urging compliance with reporting requirements.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has recently served show-cause notices on various medical colleges in India, who have failed to produce details of the stipends paid to their interns and residents.
NMC Targets Defaulting Medical Colleges Over Unreported Stipends
It is a notice issued under the warning clause, calling for such colleges to explain why the latter should not be liable for penalties for non-compliance. According to an official communication by NMC, stipend information of the financial year 2023-24 is to be furnished as per the direction of the Supreme Court of India.
The NMC has also released a list of government and private medical colleges that have not submitted the stipend data. These institutions are now under scrutiny and have been asked to provide the missing details, including payments to undergraduate interns, postgraduate residents, and senior residents, for the fiscal year 2023-24. The medical colleges are directed to send this information to the designated e-mail ID: stipend23-CDN-20011/98/2024-COORDINATION-NMC I/3726027/2024 24@nmc.org.in.
This order has been made as per the Supreme Court, which directed NMC to make stipend payments transparently to medical students. The court had stressed that all health institutions, including medical colleges, have to furnish the details about stipend payments. Following this, NMC had issued a Public Notice on April 16, 2024, directing the medical colleges to furnish their stipend data of UG interns, PG residents, and super-specialty PGs for the 2023-24 academic year. The NMC has also stated a procedure for further compliance. From the year 2024-25 onwards, medical colleges have to mandatorily post their stipend details online every month on their own official website by the 5th of every month. Towards the end of every financial year, the complete statement needs to be furnished to NMC at stipend24-25@nmc.org.in.
The NMC considers this a serious issue, and the commission has made it clear that any delay or non-compliance further can lead to penal action against the defaulting institutions. This is a move by NMC to ensure more accountability and transparency in stipend disbursement processes benefiting medical students and residents in the country.
