Saira Banu and AR Rahman Announce Divorce: End of a 29-Year Journey
After nearly three decades of marriage, renowned music composer and Oscar-winning artiste AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have decided to part ways. The couple, who tied the knot in 1995, share three children—Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen.
Saira Banu’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, confirmed the separation, citing emotional distress as the primary reason behind the decision. In an official statement, Shah explained, “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband, Mr. AR Rahman. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time.”
The statement also emphasized the emotional toll the decision has taken on Saira. “Mrs. Saira has taken this decision out of pain and agony. She requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time, as she navigates this difficult chapter in her life.”
A Marriage Rooted in Tradition
Rahman and Banu’s marriage was arranged, a tradition still valued in many Indian families. In a past interview with Simi Garewal, Rahman shared the story behind their union. He revealed that his mother had chosen Saira as his bride since his busy career left him no time for romance.
“To be honest, I didn’t have time to go and search for a bride. I was doing all these films, including Rangeela, in Bombay, so I was very busy. But I knew it was the right time to get married. I was 29, and I told my mother, ‘Find me a bride,’” Rahman shared during the interview.
His one request to his mother was simple yet heartfelt. He asked for “a simple woman who won’t give me much trouble, so I could carry on doing my music and hope she inspires me.”
Privacy Amid Public Attention
The separation has garnered widespread attention, but the couple has appealed for privacy. Fans of Rahman have expressed their support for both parties, reflecting the deep admiration and respect he commands worldwide.
As this chapter of their lives unfolds, their story reminds us of the complexities of human relationships and the courage it takes to make such life-altering decisions.
