Cyrus Poonawalla, which heads the list is a pharmaceutical giant. He just happens to be the richest man from Pune, boasting an impressive net worth of more than Rs 204,300 crore. According to the 2024 Hurun India Rich List, Poonawalla tops the list as the head of privately held Serum Institute of India, the world's largest vaccine manufacturer, making him one of the global leaders in health.

Adar Poonawalla: The Legacy of the Future

The torch has been passed on to Cyrus's son, Adar Poonawalla, the new CEO of Serum Institute. In 2011, Adar took over the reins and has expanded the reach while cementing its position as one of the world's key players in immunization efforts, manufacturing more vaccines than any other company in the world.

Poonawalla's Way to Success

The career of Cyrus Poonawalla has been anchored in a simple beginning, and later the stakes went higher. He hails from a family of horse breeders. He did his graduation as well as post-graduation from Pune University. It was in 1966 that he founded Serum Institute with a dream to produce quality vaccines in mass volumes with low prices, which soon gained international appreciation in 1994 when the WHO accorded the institute its approval that allowed Serum Institute to sell vaccines to these international organizations like UNICEF and PAHO.

This is when the institute's role became crucial as it began vaccinating the world in scale, and Poonawalla became a symbol of the face of global health progress.

Legacy and Honors

His contributions have never gone unnoticed. An honorary doctorate from Oxford University and national and international honors were bestowed upon him as a reward for his contributions to the health sector. His son Adar recently posted on social media to thank the Indian Government for recognition of Cyrus as a national icon in Healthcare, "My mentor, my hero, my father.
