Laapataa Ladies Chosen for Oscars 2025: India’s Bold Feminist Film Ready to Compete Globally!

The Film Federation of India announced on Monday that Kiran Rao’s film Laapataa Ladies has been selected as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars under the Foreign Film category. This exciting news was revealed by Jahnu Barua, Chairman of the Film Federation of India. The film was chosen from a pool of 22 nominations, which included 12 Hindi films, 6 Tamil films, and 4 Malayalam films. Competing alongside notable titles such as Animal, Kalki 2898 AD, Maidaan, and Sam Bahadur, Laapataa Ladies stood out for its fresh perspective and powerful message.

Kiran Rao’s Vision and Storytelling

Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, is a compelling film based on an award-winning story by Biplab Goswami. The screenplay and dialogues, crafted by Sneha Desai with additional dialogues by Divyanidhi Sharma, bring the story to life in a unique way. The film was first screened at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023, earning widespread acclaim.

The movie features fresh faces, including Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastav, Chhaya Kadam, and veteran actor Ravi Kishan. While it didn’t break box office records during its theatrical release in India on March 1, 2024, it gained a new fanbase after its release on Netflix, where it reached a wider audience.

A Social Satire with a Feminist Message

Laapataa Ladies explores themes of women’s rights, societal expectations, and the constraints of patriarchy. Kiran Rao’s direction shines a light on the struggles women face after marriage, often forced to give up their dreams. Despite the serious subject matter, the film uses light and breezy storytelling, making it accessible without feeling heavy-handed.

The film received largely positive reviews from critics. Saibal Chatterjee, reviewing for NDTV, gave Laapataa Ladies 3.5 out of 5 stars, praising its feminist tone and social satire. He highlighted how the film addresses weighty issues without being bogged down by them, calling it a "simple clarion call in favor of the rights of women."

Competing at the Oscars

The road to the Oscars is no small feat, and Laapataa Ladies is now set to represent India on the international stage. Its unique storytelling, feminist themes, and the critical acclaim it has garnered make it a strong contender. Kiran Rao, along with producers Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande, has crafted a film that resonates deeply with audiences, both in India and abroad.

Global Success and Beyond

Earlier this month, Kiran Rao shared exciting news that Laapataa Ladies would have a theatrical release in Japan on October 4, 2024. In her social media post, she expressed her excitement, writing, "Laapataa Ladies will be found in Japan from October 4, 2024... We are so excited for our theatrical release in Japan by Shochiku, Japan."

As Laapataa Ladies continues to captivate audiences worldwide, its selection as India’s entry for the 2025 Oscars is another milestone in its journey. With strong performances, engaging storytelling, and a relevant social message, the film is poised to make waves at the Oscars. Laapataa Ladies is more than just a film; it’s a reflection of societal realities faced by women across the world. Its selection as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars is a testament to its powerful message, unique storytelling, and the hard work of Kiran Rao and her team. As the world watches, India proudly sends Laapataa Ladies to represent the nation on the global stage.
