Minha Kim’s Next Big Goal: Taking on More Strong Female Characters Onscreen
South Korean actor Minha Kim has received widespread acclaim for her role as Sunja in the hit series Pachinko. Based on Min Jin Lee’s best-selling novel, the series follows Sunja’s journey from a naive girl to a determined breadwinner during World War II. As the show returns for its second season, Kim continues to portray Sunja, now facing the challenges of being a single working mother.
Inspiration from Family
Kim, who started her acting career just seven years ago, admitted she felt daunted by the role. Reflecting on the second season, she reveals how her mother and grandmother inspired her portrayal. “I felt a bit overwhelmed after the first season. My grandmother shared her own life stories with me, which deeply impacted how I understood Sunja’s character,” Kim shares. She credits these conversations with helping her grasp the strength and resilience required to embody Sunja.
The Importance of Food and Culture
Pachinko uses food as a significant motif, symbolizing love, power, and resilience. Kim also expressed her interest in Indian culture, saying, “I would love to visit India and explore its culture and palaces. I also enjoy Indian food.” This cultural appreciation parallels Sunja’s journey in the series, where food often represents deeper connections and personal growth.
Collaborating with Lee Min Ho
Kim discusses her collaboration with co-star Lee Min Ho, who plays Koh Hansu. The complex relationship between Sunja and Hansu required deep understanding. “Hansu and Sunja’s connection is intricate. Working with Min Ho was beneficial as he helped me explore the layers of Sunja’s character,” Kim explains.
Future Projects and Aspirations
Looking ahead, Kim is excited about representing strong women on screen. With two more seasons of Pachinko planned, she continues to evolve with her character while looking forward to future roles.
