Suriya’s Kanguva Fails at the Box Office: Did Fandom Politics and Negativity Doom It?

Discover why Suriya's ₹350 crore film Kanguva flopped at the box office. Fandom politics, trolling, and political controversies revealed as key reasons for its failure

South superstar Suriya’s high-budget film Kanguva has completed 12 days since its release, but it is struggling to survive at the box office. Made with a reported budget of ₹350 crore, the film has failed to reach even ₹100 crore globally and has earned just ₹68.47 crore in India. The disappointing numbers have sparked conversations about why Suriya’s most expensive film turned out to be a massive flop. For the first time, the makers have broken their silence on the film’s poor performance.

What Went Wrong with Kanguva?

Despite featuring big names like Suriya, Bobby Deol, and Disha Patani, Kanguva failed to make an impact. Co-producer Dhananjayan revealed in an interview that the film’s failure was influenced by factors beyond its storyline or performances. Speaking to the YouTube channel Aghayam Tamil, Dhananjayan pointed to fandom rivalry and political interference as significant reasons for the movie’s underperformance.

Dhananjayan highlighted that ongoing rivalry between two major fan groups in the Tamil film industry has played a key role in undermining Kanguva. He said, “Back in 2014, I mentioned how two fandoms target Suriya to prevent his stardom from reaching the next level. Whenever I tweet about Suriya or Kanguva, I notice negative comments and trolling from these groups.”

He further added, “One fandom, in particular, harbors intense hatred for Suriya. I don’t know the exact reason, but their trolling has been relentless. These fan groups wield immense influence in the industry, and their actions cannot be ignored.”

According to Dhananjayan, the challenges didn’t end with fandom issues. He revealed that two political parties in Tamil Nadu also contributed to the negativity surrounding the film. This stems from Suriya’s past remarks on the NEET exam and education policies, which reportedly upset these political groups.

He shared, “These political parties began spreading negativity about Kanguva, possibly as a backlash to Suriya’s earlier statements. Their influence created further challenges for the film.”

A Painful Blow for the Makers

Directed by Siva, Kanguva was envisioned as a visual spectacle and a major blockbuster for Suriya’s career. However, the combination of social media trolling, fandom rivalries, and political backlash has significantly impacted its box office performance.

While some fans have expressed disappointment over the film’s failure, others sympathize with the challenges faced by Suriya and the production team. Social media is filled with debates about whether external factors should hold so much power over a film’s success.

One fan commented, “This is heartbreaking. Suriya is a brilliant actor, and Kanguva deserved better. It’s unfair that fandom politics and negativity overshadow hard work.”

Another wrote, “The Tamil industry needs to move past such rivalries. Targeting a star like Suriya doesn’t just hurt him but the entire industry.”Despite Kanguva’s disappointing performance, Suriya remains a celebrated actor with a massive fan following. While the failure has undoubtedly been a setback, it also opens the door for conversations about the influence of fandoms and politics on cinema.

As the dust settles on Kanguva, fans and industry insiders are looking forward to Suriya’s next projects and hope he bounces back stronger.
