Internet services have been suspended, and heightened police patrols are in effect across Bahraich, as well as nearby districts like Lucknow.

BAHRAICH — Communal violence has erupted in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, following a clash during Durga Puja celebrations. The violence, which began two days ago, has intensified, leading to police evacuating Muslim families from the affected areas to safer locations. Internet services have been suspended, and heightened police patrols are in effect across Bahraich, as well as nearby districts like Lucknow.

Political Reactions

UP BJP President Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary condemned the incident, calling it "unfortunate." He emphasized the state government's vigilance, noting that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken cognizance of the situation. Chaudhary assured the public that strict action would be taken against those responsible for inciting violence, stating, "No one who aided the culprits will be spared."

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav blamed the government for the escalation, accusing the ruling BJP of fostering hatred to gain political advantage. "These incidents will continue until the government is changed," Yadav stated, calling for an investigation into the events leading to the violence.

Evacuations and Escalation

According to police reports, clashes initially erupted during a Durga idol immersion procession in Mahrajganj, Bahraich. Disputes over music played during the procession led to stone-pelting by a group of youths, which soon escalated into a violent brawl. The death of one individual, Ram Gopal Mishra, due to gunfire worsened tensions, leading to protests, arson, and road blockades.

As violence spread, police began evacuating Muslim residents from affected neighborhoods, including areas where homes and shops were reportedly set on fire. This evacuation effort was carried out to prevent further casualties and damage. Local authorities have detained 30 individuals so far and are actively seeking the prime suspects involved in the unrest.

Government Response

In response to the violence, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sought a detailed report on the incident and directed senior law enforcement officials, including DGP Prashant Kumar, to visit Bahraich. Additional police forces and anti-riot units have been deployed to maintain order.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak reassured the public, stating, "No one will be allowed to play with the law. We are committed to maintaining law and order, and those responsible for this chaos will face severe punishment."

Widespread Impact

The effects of the Bahraich unrest have also spilled into neighboring districts, with protests reported in Shravasti. Angry demonstrators in Shravasti took to the streets, shutting down markets and calling for strict action against those responsible for the violence.

As authorities work to restore calm, the situation in Bahraich remains tense. Security forces continue to patrol the streets, and curfew-like restrictions are being enforced in certain areas to prevent further incidents.

Social Media Adds to Tension

Amid the rising tensions, videos circulating on social media have shown residents protesting against the police and administration. Vehicles have been set on fire, and there are reports of clashes between groups from both communities. In an effort to curb misinformation and prevent the situation from spiraling further out of control, internet services in Bahraich have been temporarily suspended.

Moving Forward

Local leaders from both communities have called for peace and urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. As the police investigation continues, authorities are urging the public to remain calm and maintain harmony.
