BSP Makes Waves in UP By-Elections: Mayawati Claims BJP and SP Are in Cahoots!

Traditionally not one to participate in by-elections, the BSP is diving in headfirst, and it’s all part of a cunning strategy that has party leader Mayawati fired up.

In a surprising twist in the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) is gearing up to contest the upcoming by-elections—a move that’s raising eyebrows and shaking up the usual political dynamics! Traditionally not one to participate in by-elections, the BSP is diving in headfirst, and it’s all part of a cunning strategy that has party leader Mayawati fired up.

With nine assembly seats up for grabs and voting scheduled for January 20, 2024, the stage is set for a showdown primarily between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP). But with the BSP throwing its hat into the ring, things are about to get a lot more interesting!

Mayawati didn’t hold back, claiming that the BJP and SP are “in cahoots,” and since the BSP announced its candidates, both parties have been losing sleep! Political analysts suggest that the BSP’s participation could pose a significant threat to the SP, potentially disrupting their voter base.

In the 2022 assembly elections, these nine seats saw the SP clinching four, the BJP three, and one each for the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and the Nishad Party. Notably, the BSP managed to secure a strong second place in the Khair seat—the only seat reserved for the Scheduled Castes—where they garnered about 26% of the votes. However, they faced a steep defeat in other areas, often landing in third place.

As the parties gear up for battle, interestingly, the BSP is fielding a Muslim candidate in Kundarki and is strategizing with an OBC candidate in other seats, attempting to cover all bases. Meanwhile, in Miraapur, both the BSP and SP have opted for Muslim nominees, showcasing a strategic tug-of-war for community votes.

With Akhilesh Yadav’s family entering the fray in the stronghold of Karhal, and the BJP countering with a relative of a local heavyweight, this election cycle promises to be a rollercoaster of political drama.
