Cyclone Fengal: When and Where Will the Storm Make Landfall? Tamil Nadu, Puducherry Coasts on High Alert

The IMD predicts that the depression is likely to cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts, between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, close to Puducherry by the morning of November 30, 2024.

Cyclone Fengal, a deep depression forming in the Bay of Bengal, has caused huge concern for the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression is likely to weaken before it hits the coast but will still be a serious threat with gusty winds and rain. The IMD predicts that the depression is likely to cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts, between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, close to Puducherry by the morning of November 30, 2024.

The cyclone, initially expected to strengthen into a cyclonic storm, will now bring wind speeds of 45-55 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 65 km/h at the time of landfall. As a result, the coastal authorities in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have issued high-alert advisories, urging residents to remain cautious and adhere to safety protocols.

Also in danger are rough seas, making it not safe for fisherman. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh are also expected to bear the brunt of light to heavy rains accompanied with gusty winds. Maximum damage is feared in and around Chennai city and adjoining districts as the authorities kept on high alert for whatever calamity that might occur.

Local schools and colleges in Puducherry have been directed to be closed on November 29 and 30 in view of the heavy rainfall forecasts associated with Cyclone Fengal. In the meantime, the Indian Navy has also put into action a holistic disaster response plan to save lives and property. The Eastern Command of the Navy has been coordinating with the local authorities to reduce the potential impact of the cyclone.

Cyclone Fengal is impacting the southern coastal regions. It is also affecting weather conditions in Jharkhand. Officials say partial cloud cover and an increase in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C is expected over the next two days, though rain is unlikely in the region.

As Cyclone Fengal approaches the land, authorities and residents are on high alert, ready for any eventuality. The government is taking all necessary precautions to ensure safety across affected states, as the IMD continues to monitor the situation.
