District Magistrate Caught Buying Liquor, Salesman Recognizes Him
District Magistrate Caught in Liquor Shop Overpricing Probe, Orders Investigation
In an unexpected move, the District Magistrate (DM) of Sambhal, Dr. Rajendra Pensia, personally visited a local liquor shop to investigate complaints of overpricing. The DM, aiming to conduct a reality check, purchased a liquor bottle himself. However, as soon as the shopkeeper recognized him, the bottle was sold at the standard price.
The incident unfolded late Thursday night when Dr. Pensia, who was initially out for a surprise inspection at the district hospital, received a call about liquor being sold above the official rate at a shop near Shankar College Chauraha in the Sadar Kotwali area.
Acting promptly, the DM, along with Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Pradeep Verma, reached the liquor store, leaving the rest of his staff behind. To verify the complaint, the DM personally purchased a bottle of liquor, but upon being identified by the shopkeeper, he was not charged extra.
Interestingly, just moments before the DM’s arrival, another customer had been overcharged ₹10 for a similar bottle. Taking the matter seriously, Dr. Pensia has now ordered an official investigation into the overpricing practices at the shop.
This surprise action by the DM has drawn attention to the issue of overpricing at liquor stores, with many now expecting stricter enforcement of pricing regulations across the district.
