From Controversy to Deputy CM: Udhayanidhi Stalin's Rise in Tamil Nadu Politics!

New Delhi — Udhayanidhi Stalin, a prominent political figure in Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as the state’s Deputy Chief Minister. The son of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Udhayanidhi rose to national attention following his controversial remarks regarding Sanatana Dharma, which he linked to various social ills during a public event on September 2, 2023.

At the event, Udhayanidhi stated that Sanatana Dharma is a divisive ideology that promotes caste and religious distinctions. He argued that to promote humanity and equality, it must be eradicated from society. “Just as we eliminate mosquitoes, dengue, malaria, and COVID-19, it is not enough to oppose Sanatana Dharma; it must be completely removed from society,” he declared, igniting widespread backlash across the country.

This was not the first time Udhayanidhi made headlines. In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, he famously waved a red brick inscribed with “AIIMS” to draw attention to the unfulfilled promises of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) regarding the establishment of an AIIMS hospital in Madurai. His innovative campaign approach highlighted the failures of the AIADMK-BJP government, significantly impacting voter sentiment and shifting the election's trajectory in favor of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

Udhayanidhi campaigned vigorously with the red brick, stating, “Three years ago, the AIADMK and BJP inaugurated the AIIMS hospital in Madurai; do you remember? I have brought the hospital with me.” His efforts paid off as he won the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency by a margin of over 65,000 votes.

Following his victory, there were increasing calls for Udhayanidhi to be inducted into the cabinet. Responding to these demands, the DMK appointed him as the Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports in December 2022. He was given important responsibilities, including special program implementation, poverty eradication initiatives, and addressing rural indebtedness.

As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections approach, Udhayanidhi has emerged as a star campaigner for the DMK. His supporters have affectionately nicknamed him “Chinnavar” (little one), and his images alongside CM M.K. Stalin are now prominently featured on party posters and pamphlets.

Udhayanidhi's recent promotion to Deputy Chief Minister comes at a crucial time for the DMK, particularly ahead of the significant 2026 Assembly elections, when new contenders like actor Vijay are expected to pose challenges. In light of this, some DMK leaders are emphasizing the importance of shaping Udhayanidhi’s public image as a key player in the party's future.
