High Court Orders DNA Test for JJP Leader Devender Kadian Amid Paternity Allegations
Chandigarh: In a significant development, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered a DNA test for Devender Kadian, a prominent leader of the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and the brother-in-law of former Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala. This order comes in response to a petition filed by a woman claiming that Kadian is the father of her child. The court issued the directive on August 27, and a copy of the order has now surfaced.
Devender Kadian, a resident of Panipat, is a well-known figure in the JJP and has found himself embroiled in a controversy reminiscent of the high-profile paternity case involving former Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari. The woman alleges that Kadian fathered her child and has sought legal recognition of this claim.
Reacting to the court's order, Kadian stated that he is prepared to undergo the DNA test, asserting that the allegations are part of a politically motivated conspiracy to tarnish his image ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. "This is an attempt to extort money using fake documents. The woman brings up this issue every time an election is near. I am ready for the DNA test as directed by the court, and I have no objection to it," Kadian said. He further claimed that the case has been ongoing since 2002 and resurfaces during election season.
The case draws parallels to the controversy surrounding N.D. Tiwari, who faced similar allegations when a man named Rohit Shekhar claimed Tiwari as his biological father. The Delhi High Court had ordered a DNA test in that case, which eventually confirmed Shekhar's paternity claim. Following the court's ruling, Tiwari married Shekhar's mother, Ujjwala, at the age of 88.
Kadian's family has deep roots in Haryana politics. His late father, Satbir Singh Kadian, was a prominent political figure, serving as the Speaker of the Haryana Legislative Assembly and the Chairman of IFFCO during the INLD government. Devender Kadian himself contested the 2019 Assembly elections on a JJP ticket and gave a tough fight to BJP's Mahipal Dhanda, securing approximately 47,500 votes.
In the current political landscape, Kadian has been actively preparing to contest from the Samalkha constituency, a traditional Congress stronghold, after the Panipat Rural Assembly segment, where he previously contested, was allotted to the BJP in the coalition government. Kadian has been working consistently in both Samalkha and Panipat Rural constituencies over the past four and a half years and holds the position of state vice president in the JJP, with responsibilities in several districts.
The DNA test results could have significant implications for Kadian's political career, especially with the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections on the horizon.
