India Deploys AI Drones and Smart Sensors to Crack Down on Cross-Border Terror Tunnels in Jammu

In a high-stakes move to strengthen border security, the Indian Army has intensified surveillance in Jammu and parts of Kashmir by deploying AI-powered drones, underground movement-detecting sensors, and satellite-backed systems. This comes after multiple terror tunnels were found originating from Pakistan, suspected to be used for cross-border infiltration and deadly attacks like the 2019 Pulwama bombing.

India’s Tech-Powered Border Security Push

As part of a broader counter-infiltration strategy, the Indian Army has introduced AI-enabled smart fences, ground-penetrating drones, and satellite tracking systems capable of detecting underground movement. These upgrades are aimed at detecting both digging and walking vibrations along the Line of Control (LoC), particularly in vulnerable areas of Jammu where soft soil makes tunneling easier.

“Some of these tunnels are not just deep — going over 30 meters below the surface — but also stretch up to 500 meters in length,” a senior Army officer stated under condition of anonymity.

Notably, a few tunnels even had oxygen supply systems built in, hinting at a sophisticated level of planning.

Tunnel Tactics: How Terrorists Infiltrate

According to official reports, over 21 tunnels have been discovered in the Jammu region over the past few years. Most of them lead from Pakistani territory into Indian soil. Unlike Kashmir, where the terrain is rocky, the plains of Jammu offer a more diggable landscape, making it a hotspot for underground infiltration.

One of the most devastating examples was the Pulwama terror attack in 2019, where security agencies later linked the terrorists' entry route to a tunnel discovered near the LoC.

AI Drones and Radioactive Sensors Now in Play

In a major leap, India has now deployed AI-driven drones equipped with radioactive wave sensors capable of detecting even the slightest subterranean movement. These drones are designed to hover over high-risk zones and send real-time alerts to command centers.

Alongside this, satellites equipped with thermal and motion imaging tech are also being used to spot unusual digging or earth disturbances from space.

More Than Just Detection: Destruction and Prevention

Once detected, all identified tunnels are promptly neutralized through controlled demolitions or permanent sealing. Officials confirm that each newly found tunnel is carefully mapped and destroyed, often with coordination from multiple agencies including the BSF and NIA.

While tunnels are a known threat, the Indian security establishment is now combining technology, intelligence, and strategy to eliminate these invisible dangers once and for all.

With infiltration methods growing more covert, India’s multi-layered tech approach — from AI to satellites — sends a clear message: every inch of the border is being watched, both above and below ground.
