Nitin Paranjpe Shares How Unilever Achieved Its 5-Lakh-Store Expansion at INSIGHT 2025

HUL’s Nitin Paranjpe revealed how a bold 5-lakh-store target transformed the company’s growth mindset at INSIGHT 2025. Rohit Bansal highlighted resilience and long-term teamwork in entrepreneurship. Over 200 global leaders attended the leadership intensive in Coimbatore.

INSIGHT: The DNA of Success 2025, Hindustan Unilever Ltd’s Non-Executive Chairman Nitin Paranjpe narrated a dramatic account of one of HUL’s boldest growth breakthroughs—an unprecedented expansion into five lakh additional retail outlets. Speaking at the morning session on November 28, Paranjpe said the audacious goal sparked fresh energy and belief within the organisation, transforming what began as an “absurd idea” into a real achievement.

He recalled that when the target was set, no one expected to hit it. “If we had got 60,000 or even 80,000 stores, we would have been heroes,” he said. But the stretch goal changed the mindset completely. A few weeks later, the organisation began generating innovative ideas and new momentum. By September, it was evident that they might come close—and the company eventually hit the five-lakh mark “beyond anyone’s wildest imagination.”

Reflecting on the deeper leadership lesson, Paranjpe emphasized that fear of failure is the biggest block to creativity and innovation. “None of us get an opportunity to do something truly heroic because we're too afraid to fail,” he said. According to him, most people choose modest goals and never discover the depth of their true potential.

Entrepreneur and investor Rohit Bansal, Co-Founder of Titan Capital and AceVector, also addressed the gathering, sharing insights from his early entrepreneurial struggles. He said failure became a normal part of his journey and helped build resilience. Bansal added that the entrepreneurs who succeed are those who “push a little harder and last a little longer” than others.

He highlighted his long-standing partnership with Kunal Bahl, noting their commitment to “succeed or fail together,” which eliminated ego and created a culture of making decisions purely for the business.

INSIGHT 2025, hosted at the Isha Yoga Center, has brought together over 200 CEOs, CXOs, and executives from 20 countries, including leaders from the U.S., U.K., Japan, and Singapore.
