Jharkhand Elections 2024: Congress leader Ajoy Kumar, born in Karnataka, is renowned as an encounter specialist, having earned recognition during his tenure serving the city of Jamshedpur.

After 13 rounds of counting in the Jamshedpur East Assembly seat, Congress leader Ajoy Kumar is trailing BJP candidate Purnima Das Sahu by over 30,000 votes. The Jharkhand Assembly election, held in two phases on November 13 and 20, is set to determine the political future of key figures, including Chief Minister Hemant Soren and Ajoy Kumar.

Jharkhand Elections 2024: Ajoy Kumar Trails as BJP Leads in Jamshedpur East

Jamshedpur East, historically a BJP stronghold, is closely watched as Kumar, a former IPS officer and ex-MP, faces Purnima, the daughter-in-law of former Chief Minister Raghubar Das. The results could signal shifting political dynamics in Jharkhand's industrial heartland.

About Ajoy Kumar

A congress leader and a former IPS officer, Ajoy Kumar is quite a renowned name in Jamshedpur. Born in Karnataka, this police officer won recognition as an encounter specialist during his tenure as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Jamshedpur. He was a household name for his work there. Further, Kumar also found a berth as a Member of Parliament in the 15th Lok Sabha, elected from Jamshedpur. This is his best shot at wresting political turf from the BJP's traditional stronghold of representation.

Jamshedpur East: A Tough BJP Rival for Ajoy Kumar

Ajoy Kumar will be up against the BJP candidate from Jamshedpur East, Purnima Das Sahu, who is the daughter-in-law of the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and the Governor of Odisha, Raghubar Das. Das was a four-time MLA from this seat, cementing BJP's stronghold in the region until his loss in 2019. Purnima's candidacy adds a new dimension to this election, as her family legacy stands to be weighed against Ajoy Kumar's reputation as a public servant and Congress leader.

Jamshedpur East: A BJP Stronghold

Jamshedpur East is regarded as an industrial hub with the giant Tata Steel being here and being a BJP-led NDA strong hold. The constituency saw a change in 2019 when Independent candidate Saryu Roy defeated BJP's Raghubar Das, ending his long period of success. Roy received 73,945 votes. While Das received 58,112 votes and Gaurav Vallabh of Congress was able to poll only 18,976 votes.

As vote counting continues, the Jamshedpur East seat remains crucial to the BJP's gain back while it remains a foothold for the Congress in Jharkhand's political landscape; Ajoy Kumar's future hinges upon overcoming this significant deficit.
