Veteran Bengali Actor and Politician Joy Banerjee Passes Away at 62 Due to Respiratory Illness
Veteran Bengali actor and politician Joy Banerjee passed away at the age of 62 in Kolkata after suffering from prolonged respiratory issues. He was admitted to a private hospital on August 15 and although discharged briefly, his health deteriorated again. By August 17, he was placed on ventilator support, and he eventually breathed his last on August 25 at 11:35 am. His death marks the end of an era for Bengali cinema and regional politics.
Joy Banerjee rose to fame in the 1980s and 1990s with notable performances in films such as Aparupa, Hirak Jayanti, Jiwan Maran, and Nagmati. He became a household name for his impactful acting and memorable screen presence. His role in the film Chopper earned him special recognition, solidifying his place as one of the most versatile actors of Bengali cinema.
Beyond his film career, Banerjee ventured into politics and contested Lok Sabha elections in 2014 and 2019 from Birbhum and Uluberia as a BJP candidate. Though he did not secure a parliamentary seat, he remained active in state politics and was associated with the West Bengal BJP’s State Committee until he distanced himself from electoral politics in 2021.
His passing has left a void in both the entertainment and political circles of Bengal. Remembered for his dual contribution to cinema and public life, Joy Banerjee’s legacy continues to inspire fans and colleagues alike. He is survived by his wife and mother.
