Kangana’s Farm Law Remarks Spark Outrage: BJP MP Retracts After Backlash, Opposition Slams ‘Hidden Agenda’
Mandi BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut, known for her controversial statements, stirred a political storm with her recent comments on the farm laws. While making the statement, she had already hinted at the potential for controversy. Following the backlash, the BJP distanced itself from her remarks, calling them her personal views. Eventually, Kangana retracted her statement.
Kangana’s Statement on Farm Laws
Kangana Ranaut stated, "In the past few days, the media asked me questions related to the farm laws, and I suggested that farmers should request Prime Minister Modi to reinstate the farm laws. I realize now that many people are disappointed by this comment. Many supported the laws when they were first introduced, but our PM sensitively withdrew them. My views should align with my party's stance, not my personal opinions. If I have disappointed anyone with my remarks, I regret it. I take back my words."
Opposition Parties Criticize BJP
While BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia clarified that Kangana's statement does not represent the party’s official position on the farm laws, opposition parties were quick to criticize the remarks. Congress MP Pramod Tiwari claimed that Kangana's comments revealed the BJP's "hidden agenda," while AAP MP Sanjay Singh demanded a response from PM Modi. Even BJP's ally JD(U) opposed her statement.
Congress Leaders Respond
Congress leader Deepender Hooda commented on Kangana’s statement, saying, "The BJP MP Kangana Ranaut claims that it's time to reintroduce the three farm laws. I challenge them—if Congress comes to power in Haryana, there will be no force that can implement these black laws again." Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also attacked the government, stating, "Even after the martyrdom of 750 farmers, the BJP and Modi government have not realized the gravity of their crime. Talks of reinstating the three anti-farmer laws are surfacing again, and the Congress strongly opposes this."
Background on the Farm Laws
The controversy dates back to 2021 when the Modi government withdrew the three farm laws it had passed during its second term, following widespread protests by farmers across the country. For over a year, farmers staged sit-ins at the borders of Delhi, during which several deaths were reported. Citing the protests, PM Modi announced the repeal of the laws, acknowledging that the government had failed to convince the farmers and that "somewhere, we made a mistake."
Kangana’s remarks have reignited the debate on the farm laws, drawing both political and public reactions, with her eventual retraction indicating the sensitivity surrounding the issue.
