Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder Case: Calcutta High Court Orders CBI Probe Amid Widespread Protests
Kolkata, West Bengal: The Calcutta High Court has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The court has directed the police, who were initially investigating the case, to immediately hand over all documents and evidence to the CBI.
The decision follows widespread protests by doctors across West Bengal and the country, demanding justice for the victim. The protests erupted after the incident, which took place on Friday night when the junior doctor, who was on duty in the emergency ward, was brutally raped and murdered.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier expressed her concern over the incident, stating that if the police failed to resolve the case by Sunday, she would hand over the investigation to the CBI. Speaking outside the victim's home in North 24 Parganas on Monday, Banerjee described the incident as "tragic" and emphasized the need for immediate action. She also called for the establishment of a fast-track court to expedite the case.
Despite the ongoing investigation, only one suspect has been arrested so far, leading to criticism from the medical community. The Federation of All India Medical Students (FAIMS) has demanded the swift arrest of the main accused and the implementation of a Central Protection Act to ensure the safety of healthcare professionals.
Given the nature of the crime, it is widely believed that more than one individual may have been involved. The protesting doctors have insisted on the arrest of all those responsible, expressing frustration over the police's inability to apprehend additional suspects.
The case has garnered national attention, with calls for justice growing louder as the CBI takes over the investigation. The medical community and the public alike are awaiting swift action and a thorough inquiry to bring those responsible to justice.
