Mahayuti Leads Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024

Maharashtra conducted polling for all 288 assembly constituencies on November 20, 2024, in a single-phase election. According to the latest updates from the Election Commission of India (ECI), the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance has crossed the majority mark and is heading for a significant victory, setting the stage for a return to power in the state.

Mahayuti's Dominance

The Mahayuti alliance, which comprises the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction, is currently leading in 224 seats. This includes BJP leading in 130 seats, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena in 54, and Ajit Pawar's NCP in 40 seats. These numbers showcase a commanding majority for the ruling coalition.

Maha Vikas Aghadi Trails

On the other side, the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, consisting of Congress, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), and Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction, is trailing with leads in 51 seats. A Repeat of Lok Sabha Trends?

The current assembly trends mirror some results from the previous Lok Sabha elections. During the Lok Sabha polls, the BJP-led NDA alliance had won 17 seats, with BJP securing 9, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena winning 7, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction taking 1 seat. In contrast, the Maha Vikas Aghadi had won 30 seats, including 13 for Congress, 9 for Shiv Sena (UBT), and 8 for Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction.

Key Contest and Implications

The main contest in this election has been between the BJP-led Mahayuti and the Congress-led MVA. With the Mahayuti heading towards a massive win, the BJP is likely to solidify its leadership position in Maharashtra politics. This resounding victory also signifies the growing strength of the NDA in regional elections, marking a significant setback for the MVA.

As vote counting progresses, all eyes remain on the final seat tally and how it shapes Maharashtra’s political landscape for the next five years.
