Manipur Violence: BJP vs Congress Escalates Political Face-Off Over Crisis
Fresh violence in Manipur has sparked a sharp political face-off between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress party, with both accusing the other of fueling the crisis. There has been a sharp reaction from Bharatiya Janata Party President JP Nadda against Congress over what he described as "the incorrect, false, and politically motivated narrative regarding the ongoing unrest" in the state. Nadda’s comments came just hours after Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge demanded that President Droupadi Murmu intervene, accusing both the Union and state governments of failing to restore peace in Manipur over the past 18 months.
In his rebuttal, Nadda questioned the Congress party’s role in Manipur's historical issues, claiming that the current violence is a consequence of their past failure to handle the region's local conflicts effectively. He reminded Kharge of the bloody history of Manipur under Congress rule, particularly the violent 1990s, where thousands were killed and lakhs displaced due to ongoing violence. Nadda also pointed out that the complete blockade of Manipur had taken place for more than 120 days in 2011 under Congress, and stressed the fact that the BJP-led government had transformed the Northeast with focus areas on economic growth, security, and development.
On the other hand, Kharge's letter to President Murmu expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation - 300 lives lost, with women, children, and infants among them, and nearly 100,000 people displaced from their homes who live in relief camps. The situation is "unabated" and Kharge asked the president to intervene to restore peace.
The party has repeatedly insisted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the region has seen tremendous growth; for instance, connectivity has improved while more than 10 historical peace accords have been seen. The party also pointed out that multidimensional poverty in Manipur has reduced to 5% in 2022, whereas it was 20% in 2013.
As the political slugfest between BJP and Congress continues, people in Manipur remain entrenched in a cycle of violence and unrest with both parties keeping shifting the blame for this turmoiling region upon each other.
