Neglect by Officials: Villagers Protest Poor Road Conditions by Cultivating Rice in Muddy Roads
Koppal, Sept. 4 — In a dramatic protest against the neglect of rural infrastructure, residents of several villages in Koppal district have taken to cultivating rice in the muddy roads of their communities. This action highlights the severe deterioration of road conditions due to relentless monsoon rains and the lack of response from local officials and representatives.
The incessant rainfall in Koppal district has transformed many rural roads into muddy pits, resembling paddy fields. In areas such as Bahaddurbandi, Yaradona, and Bijanalli, the roads are now inundated with water and mud, creating large potholes and obstructing travel.
Despite repeated appeals to local authorities and elected officials for road repairs, no action has been taken. The frustration of residents culminated in a unique protest where they planted rice in the muddy roads of Bahaddurbandi village, symbolizing their discontent and highlighting the dire condition of their infrastructure.
The road connecting Bahaddurbandi to Hoovinaal has been in a state of disrepair for years. Despite numerous requests for maintenance, no improvements have been made. During the monsoon season, the road has become almost impassable, with vehicles skidding and accidents becoming frequent. This situation has made it extremely difficult for elderly people and children to navigate the area safely.
The situation is similar across other villages in the district, including Kanakagiri, Kartagi, Gangavathi, and Kushtagi. Many roads are now resembling large ponds due to the accumulation of water and lack of proper drainage and maintenance.
Residents are expressing their outrage, stating that despite significant funds allocated for road construction and maintenance, shoddy work by contractors has led to rapid deterioration. In some areas, roadwork has not even commenced, leaving roads in a dismal state.
The district administration and state government are urged to take immediate and serious action to address the crumbling roads. There is a pressing need for effective road repairs to ensure the safety and well-being of the local population.
