Noida BDS Student Dies by Suicide, Cites Harassment by Professors in Note

A BDS student at a private university in Greater Noida died by suicide, citing mental harassment by faculty in her note. Two professors have been arrested, and students staged protests following the incident.

Greater Noida: A shocking case of alleged academic harassment emerged on Friday night when Jyoti Sharma, a second-year BDS student from Gurugram, was found dead in her hostel room at a private university in Greater Noida. In a handwritten suicide note recovered from her room, Jyoti accused two faculty members and the university administration of prolonged mental harassment and humiliation.

Two university staff members have been arrested following a complaint filed by Jyoti’s family.

"They mentally harassed me. They humiliated me. I have been in this stress for a long time," the note read. She also demanded that the accused face jail time for their actions, stating that she wanted them to experience the same emotional trauma she endured.

Arrests and Police Investigation

Additional DCP Greater Noida, Sudhir Kumar, confirmed the arrests, stating, “Two staff members from the university management have been arrested based on the family’s complaint. The body has been sent for a post-mortem.”

He further added that tensions ran high on campus, with both students and family members protesting against the alleged negligence of the university authorities. A brief clash occurred between protestors and police, and a viral video shows Jyoti’s relatives physically confronting the head of the dentistry department.

Student Protests and Accusations of Forgery Pressure

The protestors allege that Jyoti was under immense mental stress due to accusations of forging signatures—an issue they believe was handled in an unfair and intimidating manner by the faculty.

The police were able to de-escalate the situation through dialogue. “Peace has been restored, and legal proceedings are underway,” said DCP Kumar.

University Responds, Committee Formed

In response to the incident, the university has suspended two faculty members pending investigation.

Dr. Ajit Kumar, Public Relations Officer of the university, stated, “A committee has been formed to probe the matter. Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings. For now, two teachers have been suspended.”

The incident has reignited conversations about mental health support in academic institutions and the need for stronger accountability systems to prevent such tragedies.
