Odisha Braces for Storm ‘Dana’: High Alert as Cyclone Threatens Four States!

In a significant weather alert, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of Cyclone Dana's impending arrival, urging residents to stay vigilant. Set to hit Odisha and West Bengal on October 24-25, this fierce storm is expected to unleash heavy rainfall across four states, causing authorities to take immediate precautionary measures.

The Storm's Trajectory

According to the IMD, a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is predicted to intensify into a severe cyclone. Cyclone Dana is projected to make landfall along the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal, leading to heavy rainfall until October 26. The storm’s effects are anticipated to extend to Jharkhand and Bihar on the night of October 24 and the morning of October 25.

Preparing for the Downpour

Weather experts from the Ranchi Meteorological Centre have indicated that Jharkhand will begin experiencing weather changes by Wednesday evening. Southeast regions may witness heavy rain, while other areas could be hit by strong winds and thunderstorms. In Bihar, districts including Bhagalpur, Jamui, and Gaya could see mild to moderate rain accompanied by gusty winds.

IMD Issues Strong Warnings

The IMD has issued alerts predicting wind speeds of up to 120 km/h due to Cyclone Dana. Fishermen along the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea between October 23 and 25. In anticipation of the storm, schools in multiple districts have been closed, and a total of 197 trains have been canceled.

State-Level Preparations

The Odisha government is ramping up its response by requesting 10 additional teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari announced that officials have inspected 250 cyclone relief centers, where evacuees will be housed. Provisions such as food, water, medicine, and other essentials are being prepared for those relocated to safer areas.

Kolkata Airport on Alert

Kolkata Airport officials are also taking precautions against the impending cyclone, ensuring that the airport's infrastructure and drainage systems are ready for potential heavy rainfall and wind gusts.
