A young man in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, planned a fake robbery for his in-laws with an aim to repay some debts that he incurred in his addiction to online games. The young complainant had identified himself as Pawan from the Heerkheda village and lodged a police complaint claiming that he had been robbed of ₹6 lakh on the way to deposit it in the bank. He narrated how bikers allegedly snatched his bag full of cash and fled. However, police investigation unmasked that the robbery was all staged by Pawan himself.

Online Gaming Addiction: Unnao Man Fakes Robbery to Cover Debts

In fantasy gaming, Pawan had reportedly incurred a loss of approximately ₹18 lakh in the last three or four years, using money borrowed from friends and family. Unable to clear that debt, he requested ₹6 lakh from his wife's parents to wipe away his losses. The couple concocted an "abduction" with this motive in mind and got themselves kidnapped.
The police investigation soon discovered inconsistencies in his account by analyzing the CCTV footage of the crime scene. The police further investigated Pawan and gathered concrete evidence to expose his fake robbery scheme. Once the truth was out, Pawan was taken into custody and charged with misleading the police and filing a false report.
