Quick-Thinking Railway Trackman Saves Hundreds of Lives, Prevents Major Train Accident on Konkan Railway
Karwar, September 7: In an extraordinary display of alertness, Railway Trackman Mahadev has been hailed as a hero after his quick actions averted a potentially catastrophic train accident on the Konkan Railway. His timely intervention saved the lives of hundreds of passengers traveling on the Thiruvananthapuram-Delhi Rajdhani Express.
The incident occurred between Kumta and Honnavar, where Mahadev noticed a critical welding failure on the railway tracks at 4:50 AM on Wednesday. Realizing the imminent danger, he immediately called the Kumta railway station to halt the approaching train. However, the Rajdhani Express had already departed. Unable to reach the train’s loco-pilot by phone, Mahadev sprinted along the tracks, covering half a kilometer in just five minutes, and managed to signal the train to stop before it reached the damaged section.
Thanks to his swift action, a major disaster was averted, and the necessary repairs were carried out before the train continued its journey. Konkan Railway officials praised Mahadev’s presence of mind and dedication, with the railway’s Chief Managing Director, Sanjay Kumar Zha, announcing a cash reward of ₹15,000 in recognition of his bravery. Mahadev was honored on the tracks near Murudeshwar by Senior Engineer B.S. Nadage for his heroic efforts.
The Konkan Railway’s official Twitter account also lauded Mahadev, calling him a "real hero" for his life-saving actions.
