Sunil Sangwan, the former superintendent of Haryana's Sunaria Jail, has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Sangwan, who oversaw the release of rape and murder convict Gurmeet Ram Rahim on parole or furlough six times during his tenure, is now contest the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections from the Charkhi Dadri constituency.

Sangwan served in government service for over 22 years, having joined the Haryana Prison Department in 2002. He has held several key positions, including the role of superintendent at multiple jails, with his longest tenure being at Sunaria Jail in Rohtak. Sunaria Jail is where Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim is serving a sentence for the rape of two female followers and the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati. Ram Rahim has been granted parole and furlough on multiple occasions, six of which occurred while Sangwan was the jail superintendent.

Sunil Sangwan is the son of former Haryana minister Satpal Sangwan, who left the Congress two months ago to join the BJP. Sunil Sangwan opted for voluntary retirement (VRS) before entering politics. His VRS application was accepted by the Haryana government on Sunday, and he officially joined the BJP the following day.

Sunil Sangwan’s Political Ambitions

Sunil Sangwan's entry into politics comes after a long career in public service. His transition from a high-ranking official in the prison department to a potential BJP candidate for the Haryana Assembly elections is seen as a strategic move by the party, especially in the Charkhi Dadri constituency.

In the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections, the BJP had fielded wrestler Babita Phogat from Charkhi Dadri, but she finished third with 24,786 votes, or 19.59% of the vote share. Satpal Sangwan, Sunil's father, contested the election as a candidate from the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and finished second with 29,577 votes, or 23.38% of the vote share.

Sunil Sangwan’s entry into the BJP and his potential candidacy is expected to shake up the political landscape in Charkhi Dadri. His family background and extensive government service experience make him a strong contender for the seat.

Personal Life

Sunil Sangwan is a family man with a son and a daughter, both serving as captains in the Indian Army. His family’s dedication to public service adds to his appeal as a political candidate.

As the Haryana Assembly elections approach, Sangwan's role in politics will be closely watched, particularly given his connection to Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s parole and furlough during his time as jail superintendent. His decision to join the BJP marks a significant shift in his career from public service to active politics.
