RSS Backs Caste Census, Emphasizes National Unity and Welfare Focus

Palakkad, September 2: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has expressed its support for a nationwide caste census, aligning with the growing calls for such an initiative across the country. However, the RSS has emphasized that the data should be used exclusively for welfare programs and not for political gains.

Amid ongoing demands led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for a caste-based census, the RSS's statement comes as a significant development. "The RSS has already stated that caste enumeration is a sensitive issue, especially within Hindu society. It is vital for national unity and integrity, and must be handled with care," said RSS spokesperson Sunil Ambekar during a three-day gathering in Palakkad, Kerala.

Ambekar further noted, "While caste data is necessary for addressing specific welfare needs of communities, it should not be exploited for electoral benefits. The census must focus on uplifting underprivileged communities rather than serving as a tool for political advantage."

The RSS's position comes amid accusations from Congress that both the BJP and RSS are opposed to the welfare of marginalized communities. Congress has asserted that the RSS's stance reveals an unwillingness to support caste-based enumeration, which the party believes is crucial for social justice.

In response to the RSS's statement, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh remarked, "First Kangana, now the RSS, and next perhaps the 'nominal' Prime Minister. Full social justice can only be achieved through a caste census and by removing the 50% cap on reservations for Dalits, Adivasis, and OBCs. The BJP-RSS are being exposed."

This ongoing debate highlights the complexities surrounding the caste census in India, as political and social organizations grapple with the implications of such a significant undertaking.
