The alleged embezzlement of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has opened a politically sensitive front for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but the Samajwadi Party (SP) appears to be approaching the issue with some caution.

The controversy involves allegations of irregularities in the handling and counting of cash and valuables donated by devotees at the temple. An Uttar Pradesh Police FIR was registered against eight people following a preliminary Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry, and all eight accused were arrested. Nearly ₹80 lakh was also reported recovered during the investigation.

For the SP, however, the issue is not simply another corruption allegation. The Ram Temple occupies an unusually important place in BJP politics and in the party's broader ideological narrative. That makes any attack over alleged irregularities potentially powerful, but also politically risky.

Why Akhilesh Yadav Is Raising the Issue

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has repeatedly questioned how donations at the temple were handled and has attacked the BJP over the controversy.

The Opposition has attempted to turn the issue into a question of accountability: if devotees donated money and valuables in faith, who was responsible for protecting them?

The SIT's preliminary findings reportedly pointed to significant lapses in the donation-management system. Investigators have continued examining how the alleged diversion took place and how much money may ultimately have been involved.

This gives the SP an opportunity to argue that the controversy is about administration and accountability rather than religion itself.

But There Is a Political Risk

The challenge for the SP is obvious.

Any aggressive attack on the Ram Temple can easily be framed by political opponents as an attack on the temple or Hindu faith rather than criticism of alleged financial wrongdoing.

That is why the distinction between the temple, devotees and the alleged accused individuals on one side, and political accountability on the other, is important.

The SP's argument is essentially that faith should not shield anyone from scrutiny. But the BJP can counter that the arrests and investigation themselves demonstrate that action is already being taken.

The political battle therefore becomes less about whether an investigation exists and more about whether it is sufficiently transparent and independent.

Why It Matters Ahead of UP Elections

The timing also matters. Uttar Pradesh is heading towards another major political contest, and the BJP's relationship with the Ram Temple remains central to its political messaging.

The Opposition sees the donation controversy as an opportunity to question the BJP on an issue traditionally associated with its strongest ideological ground. The Congress and BSP have also criticised the handling of the matter.

But the SP cannot afford to appear as though it is politicising religious faith.

That explains the cautious approach.

The party can attack alleged corruption, demand transparency and question the management of donations. But going too far could allow the BJP to shift the conversation from alleged financial irregularities to religion and identity.

For now, the Ram Temple donation controversy remains both a legal investigation and a political test. The eventual findings of the investigation could determine whether the issue becomes a temporary controversy or a much bigger electoral talking point in Uttar Pradesh.
