Sambhal Mosque Violence: Three Dead, 24 Injured as Police Clash with Mob; Authorities Impose Restrictions, Find Bullet Shells of 'Different Bores

Sambhal violence over mosque survey leaves three dead, 24 injured. Authorities impose restrictions, close schools, and find bullet shells of varying bores.

SAMBHAL, UP – Violent protests broke out in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal district on Sunday during a court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque, leaving three people dead and dozens injured, including 24 police and administrative officers. The violence has prompted the administration to impose strict restrictions, including that outsiders be barred and internet services be suspended.

The incident started with the stone-pelting by a mob opposing the survey, which turned violent by setting some vehicles on fire. The police had to impose baton-charges and tear gas to control the volatile situation. There were reports of "different bores" bullet shells recovered from the incident site which formed serious doubts in regards to presence of armed individuals during the clash.

Security Measures and Restrictions

The Sambhal administration responded by instituting stricter laws to ensure law and order. Entry to the city is restricted, and there is a need for prior permission for social organisations, public representatives, and others. The district administration has closed all schools in the district on November 25 as a precautionary measure. Internet services have also been suspended to stop the miscommunication and rumor-mongering.

Casualties and Injuries

Clashes broke out, in which three people died and many were injured, most of them high-ranking police and administrative officers. The incident is under investigation by the authorities, who said that several bullet shells recovered from the scene suggest more than one type of firearm might have been used.
