A wedding procession in Sector-34 on Sunday took an alarming turn as firecrackers caught the canopy of the groom's carriage on fire. The groom and several children on the carriage, fortunately, remained unscathed as the fire was doused quickly.

The incident took place near the B-3 Aravali Apartment community center wherein a wedding procession utilised huge fireworks throughout. As claimed by Dharmendra Sharma, president of the apartment's RWA, the fire broke out at the upper portion of the groom's carriage. Fortunately, nobody was injured in the fire as everyone evacuated promptly.
Fireworks Policy Ignored
Sharma said bookings for community centers require a written commitment not to use any fireworks, but such a rule is flouted in most weddings. The incident throws light on the negligence and potential dangers of ignoring such guidelines.
Call for Action
In light of the incident, the RWA has written to the District Magistrate, urging a complete ban on celebratory fireworks. The safety risk aside, these very same activities are contributing to the pollution levels of the city, which skyrocket by manifolds during the wedding seasons.
