Digital Arrest Backfires: Man Posing as Cop Caught on Camera by Expert
Cyber Expert Exposes 'Digital Arrest' Scam: Scammer Caught on Camera
In a growing trend across India, the "digital arrest" scam is becoming a major headache for cyber police. Cybercriminals posing as police officers trick victims into believing they are under arrest, often demanding money to resolve fabricated charges. However, for the first time, one such scammer was caught on camera when cyber expert Mohit Yadav from Delhi exposed the fraud.
Mohit received a call from a scammer posing as a police officer, dressed in a full police uniform. The scammer, claiming to be from Lokmanya Tilak Police Station, accused Mohit of misusing his Aadhaar and mobile number. He warned Mohit that his mobile number would soon be blocked, attempting to instill fear.
The scam began when the fraudster told Mohit that his ID was involved in a case with 17 complaints and a registered FIR. To convince him further, the scammer made a video call, pretending to be seated in a police station, with the police logo in the background. He encouraged Mohit to verify the police station’s contact number on Google, making the scenario seem more authentic.
As the scam continued, the fraudster sent Mohit a link, claiming it would take him to the Supreme Court’s website, where a warrant would be displayed once a case number was entered. According to the scammer, this was an "arrest warrant" tied to Mohit's case.
However, Mohit, being a cyber expert, quickly recognized the fraudulent activity. He understood that most victims fall prey to such tactics by this stage, losing money in the process. However, Mohit’s alertness helped him expose the scam instead. He recorded the entire conversation and the scammer’s actions on video, offering invaluable evidence for authorities to crack down on the growing menace of digital arrest fraud.
Thanks to Mohit’s awareness, the scam was thwarted, but the case highlights the need for public vigilance against such cybercrime tactics.
