Karnataka Bhovi Corporation Scam: Cops Harassment, Gender Power Play, Abuse Allegations in Death of Bhovi Developer Jeeva S
The tragic death of 33-year-old Karnataka Bhovi Development Corporation scam accused Jeeva S has raised an outrage against the deep-seated gender dynamics of the Indian judicial system. Jeeva had allegedly committed suicide, following a police investigation, where she said Deputy Superintendent Kanakalakshmi, CID officer, subjected her to extreme mental and physical harassment.
In an 11-page death note, she had written about the physical and mental harassment she faced during the CID inquiry. According to Jeeva, she was stripped, humiliated, and made a victim of bribery demands. She alleged that the officer refused to accept the evidence presented and demanded a ₹25 lakh bribe. Her sister has filed a complaint against DSP Kanakalakshmi and accused her of causing the harassment that led to Jeeva's tragic death. It has led the officer to be investigated with charges of corruption and abetment of suicide.
In this case, the contention draws high attention to societal and cultural implications of the imbalance of gender power within the legal and law enforcement system. Both women and some men suffer difficulties in male-dominated professions like law enforcement. Some are subjected to abuse, intimidation, and coercion. In cases where the accused are vulnerable and the power is heavily held by the authorities, gender dynamics may determine how women are treated. Often, the women are rewarded with tragic ends in cases where societal expectations that women should put up with mistreatment or remain silent about the suffering prevail, as in the case of Jeeva.
The case also throws up some serious questions about police corruption and abuse of power. Demands of bribes and physical harassment of suspects within law enforcement systems undermine the integrity of the justice system. Women, especially those belonging to marginalized communities, are the most vulnerable to such exploitation.
As the investigation into Jeeva's claims and the Bhovi Corporation scam unfolds, this case serves as a potent reminder that the police force stands in dire need of accountability. The course of this case may forever alter the fabric of gender dynamics in police investigations and push India toward a different future for police reforms.
